Estimate horsepower output from any engine type (4-stroke, 2-stroke, any fuel type, turbo, blower, Wankel, etc.). Estimating engine power. This calculator will help you estimate the potential of an engine. Roll your pointer to the left of the table to see typical values. There are tooltips over.
Beginner'sGuide to PropulsionRangeand Fuel Consumption ActivityIf so instructedby your teacher, print out a worksheet page for these problems. Before you begin:Airplane specificationsgenerally include pieces of information about the, andof a given airplane. These three items make it possible to calculatefuel consumption, range, and cruise speed.Equations:.To find thetime it takes to travel a given distance at a given speed, use thefollowing equation:.To find theairplane's fuel consumption:Note: Totalfuel is considered the total amount of fuel excluding any fuel reserves.Reserves can generally be considered 10% of the total amount of fuelcapacity for the airplane. For airplanes that are able to fly by 'IFR'(Instrument Flight Rules), or with instruments, the reserves willbe higher. If this is the case, the specifications will show the IFRquantity reserves. Total time is the number that you calculated inEquation 1.Directions:.Using thesetwo equations and the data from the on four types of aircraft, answer the questionson the worksheet. (Ask your teacher if you can print the worksheet.).Use theWeb site for assistance with speed, distance, and/or weight conversions.Answer the followingquestions:.You are an acrobaticpilot getting ready to go to an air show.
The air show is beingheld at an airport 500 nautical miles (NM) away. Given the cruisingspeed of the Extra 300 you are flying, how long will it take tofly to the air show?.In the situationabove, will you be able to fly to the air show without refuelingalong the way?
Why or why not?.A Cessna Skylanehas a range of 820 NM and a cruising speed of 140 KTS. How manyhours will it take you to fly 820 NM?.Since the Skylanehas a fuel capacity of 88 US GAL (including 10% in reserve - Don'tforget to subtract the 10% before figuring your consumption.), howmany gallons of fuel per hour does it use?.You are flyinga Cessna Skylane at a speed of 120 KTS. You are flying on a tripthat will take you 520 NM. How long will it take you to get to yourdestination?.In the situationabove, given that your Cessna holds 88 US GAL of fuel (with 10%held back as reserve fuel), how much fuel will you use?

(Hint: youwill need your final answer from Question 4 to find this number.).You are thepilot of a Learjet 31A leaving Chicago's Meigs airfield under densefog conditions. You must fly using your instruments (IFR). How muchfuel do you have for this flight? (Don't forget about your reserves.).You've beenflying the Learjet for 1.5 hours, at a speed of Mach.76 (Visit aconversion page, like,to convert Mach numbers into Knots.), under visual flight conditions(VFR). How much fuel do you have left (excluding reserves)?.How much farthercould you fly on the fuel you have left from Question 8?.

Determine approximate fuel costs and mileage. Assume the following factors as an example: Your employees live an average of 10 miles from work, the price of fuel in your area is $2.50 per gallon, and the average miles per gallon of a vehicle is 20. If an employee travels to work and back five days each week, that's a total of 40 trips a month. Multiply 40 trips times 10 miles to get 400 miles. Divide 400 by 20 miles per gallon to get 20 gallons of gas. Multiply 20 gallons by $2.50 per gallon to get a cost of $50 a month in fuel.
You may have to add extra money if employees must drive their vehicles for other business-related activities.
